in seattle, but the quintessential new year's eve celebration takes place in times square, new york city, going to be a little breezy. so bundle up. temperatures in the 30s. you get down to some of the areas where the tall buildings are, you get kind of the funneling of the wind, and the result, it's going to feel a little colder than 36 degrees. take awe cross the country. here comes the rainfall for the southeast. in atlanta, it will hold off until after midnight. indianapolis, we'll see 31 degrees at midnight. but the coldest areas that we can find across the lower 48 states will be in the dakotas and the midwest with singlie digits, but that is very deceiving because it's going to feel like minus 20, minus 30 degree windchill factors in those areas. in the central united states, salt lake city only 16 degrees for your new year's celebration. we go towards the west coast, we could see visibility problems as far as seattle is concerned. as the next storm system is expected to move onshore. want to show you where that snowfall is going to be locatesed. primarily right across interstate

, serious snow expected there in the next several days. look at the west coast and seattle, the snow levels have been down as low as 200 feet. they will go up to 400 feet for the afternoon. some of these snowfall totals, very substantial going into the next several days. could see 10 or 20 inches of snowfall. but in the midwest, this is what we'll focus on. we haven't seen a significant snow event like this. this one occurs as we go into wednesday and then for thursday, so you're traveling into chicago or des moines or topeka, wichita and even into denver. you could expect perhaps some delays later on in the workweek. how about 48-hour snowfall totals? spokane just under 5 inches being reported there. in libby, montana, two-day snow totals just about 2 feet. and newtown, connecticut, right now overcast with rain. the temperature a cold rain. 41 degrees. the winds are out of the east and northeast but as we go into the next five days, we'll look at a little bit of a break weatherwise. those temperatures will remain in the 40s but then as we go into friday, the rain is going to return and a 2

is a painkiller. what do you see in seattle? >> if you pull a group of people together from this community, someone in that group will have had a friend, loved one, who has had difficulty with a prescription drug or potentially died from that. >> reporter: his unit responds to 45 calls a month for overdoses of these types of medications. it can be difficult to tell if it's painkiller or heroin, because they come from the same ingredient and do the same sort of thing to your body. >> aside from needle tracks in the arms, someone who has had an overdose of pain medication like that, they can look very much the same. >> very much. they can be unconscious from medication that they think is relatively safe for them because of instead of getting on the street they get it from a pharmacist. possible drug overdose. these people are suffering from chronic pain. they know that a little bit of pain medication helps, so maybe a lot would help a lot more. >> reporter: when we arrive, another medic is on the scene. >> somewhere in that parking garage there is a call about someone having a drug overdose.

of the west coast, seattle, down to california. christmas leave looks more tranquil. that snow will dumping snow in portions of rockies and colorado and wyoming. we'll be accumulating snowfall and eventually this storm is going to head into the center of the country. it will be a pretty strong storm and very cold air with it. so definitely we're going to be talking about snow accumulations texas panhandle, parts of arkansas and missouri and illinois. some of these countries don't see a white christmas. so we're talking about quite a bit of snow, up to six inches locally and higher amounts, a winter storm watch has been issued across the state of oklahoma. good news for anyone that wants snow in the center of the country. christmas eve, messy day out in southeast and thunderstorms ahead of that winter storm could be firing up as severe weather. we'll keep an eye on portions of south. not just christmas eve but even christmas day, severe weather with thunderstorms that could produce some isolated tornadoes and large hail. >> gregg: it could be making it to grandma's house a little tricky. >>

. fortunately we have relatively quiet weather through parts of california and portions of seattle. showers across the portions of the pacific northwest. as we head into tomorrow and wednesday we have a new storm system that will be arriving producing a lot of heavy rain, three to six inches. the ground is saturated from the last series of storm systems. this could pose big issues across the areas already hit very hard with all this rain. look at the future radar as we head into tuesday and wednesday more rain. basically the northern parts of the rockies we have snowfall. we'll see snowfall across portions of the west coast but even into the northern rockies. dealing with more moisture across portions of west coast even though we dealt with a number of storm systems. jon, very quickly another big story how incredibly warm it has been across the center of the country. 70 degrees for high temperatures in kansas city and 80 in the city of dallas. jon: wow. >> possibly record-setting temperatures. jon: december surprise. maria molina thank you. >> thanks. jenna: you might expect this next story

. the daughter now 19-20 years old. mike from houston, texas. chip from seattle, washington. caller: how's it going? i just have a quick question. i believe the country was built on innocent until proven guilty. it certainly seems like gun owners at large are guilty until they otherwise prove themselves to be a good guy or innocent. i have a tough time rationalizing what i hear about the innocent until proven guilty. we have this idea because of this one horrific act that everyone is now guilty of possibly being subjected to doing the same thing. host: what you do as a society? it not only deals with gun- control, but wayne lapierre also blaming the entertainment industry and whether we need to do a better job arming schools. there are a lot of issues coming into play. caller: there are and it would take too long to address all of them. i believe in individual rights. i'm not trying to attack anyone of these individual rights. how'd we make sure the crazy people, criminals, how do we keep the guns out of their hands? we have a litany of laws are rare that are not well in forest. gun show
